Safety? On the headlines on yesterday's Straits Times, we had an article informing about the project of LTA and police to install more CCTV cameras (or as they call them, electronic eyes) along the streets in Singapore. This allows the police to be able to spot threats and take actions quickly. Threats like terrorist planting bombs or unlawful activities. According to the article, the system will eventually be smart enough to differentiate amongst the various human activities to identify a crime. In addition, the electronic eyes will be used to record footage of events. Lastly, the next phase will be to install the cameras in public transports too.
It is for the security of the country. There is no argument against that but does this increased "essential" security also means that we have less privacy? How does taking a walk down Orchard Road with over a hundread cameras staring at you feels? And if these systems can record and are smart enough to differentiate crimes, will our every move be monitored and possibly recorded? To the extent that maybe the moment we commit a crime, the footage will be used against us? Somehow, I feel that an environment or should I say, system of justice, is being built base on fear.
Maybe I am watching too much Sci-fi shows... Anyway, this is part of "coffee shop bitching", as my officer puts it.
